Don’t forget, the Golden Globes are on this tonight (Sunday, January 11th). We’ll be straight on the case tomorrow with the best and worst of the 2009 GG’s. In the meantime, here’s what everyone expects to be the general theme of the 66th Golden Globe Awards red carpet.
A few weeks ago, when the nominees were announced, many made their predictions and the most noticable similarity between them was the opinion that things are going to be “a bit more low key than usual”. The jeweller Lorraine Schwartz, who normally decks the stars in thousands of carats of bling, says “This year, it’s not about a 200-karat necklace.”
They also say that “People will be elegant, but not over the top” , which translates for me as ‘there are going to be a lot of dull, boring black dresses’. TIt’s follows logic that hair and makeup will be similarly downgraded (think simple chignons and French twists). What!?! You mean that looks with bling overload like the one above from Beyonce in 2007 may be MIA this year? What’s the point!!?
Now, I’m all for being deferential in this economic crisis, but I also think fashion should be a form of escapism, and I’d hate to see the red carpet ( normally known for its glitter and glitz and aspirational glamour) suffer because of it. After the 2008 Golden Globes were cancelled due to the US writers strike, I feel it would be a great shame if Hollywood didn’t see tonight as a chance to cheer us, and them, all up by throwing caution to the wind and showing us how real glamour is not a thing of the past.
Don’t forget to tune in tonight and see it all happening live on the E! channel.
