Cool Britannia: Delaila Jewellery

by Amazona on April 20, 2009

Delaila jewellery is one of the most inspiring success stories of young British design in recent years. The creator of this super-cool brand is Laila Aitken.  Quite literally growing up in the fashion industry, her mother was the owner of Samson and Delilah, a landmark clothing store that catered to such celebrities as Marvin Gaye, Alice Cooper and David Bowie, for their onstage wardrobes.

Laila was influenced by many cultures living alternately in Pakistan, Italy and America growing up. When she settled in Florence her long love of daring fashion took root. As a buyer for small boutiques and vintage sellers she was inspired to step out on her own and create extraordinary pieces of jewellery, defining her adventerous concept of style. On a cruise, in 2006, she launched her line and was an immediate success.

To produce her show-stopping designs, Laila chose the Italian factory responsible for producing much of Chanel, Gucci and Marc Jacobs jewellery collections. Her pieces, which regularly grace the pages of Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire, are created from materials that include plexiglass,  gold, rhodium and Swarovski crystal. What’s even better for tall girls, is that we are the perfect canvas for these statement pieces!

Delaila collections can be found in upscale jewellery establishments all over the world such as Harvey Nichols in Dubai, Hong Kong and London, Erickson Beamon and Liberty.
You can get yours at credit-crunch friendly prices at Amazona Style right now as all Delaila jewellery is currently on sale - up to 50% off!

*Look out for more Cool Britannia posts as we celebrate the best of British Young Designers*

Is It Me or is the Whole World having Sex?

by Amazona on April 14, 2009

I’m young, free and single and I live in London (which my Welsh grandmother once described as ‘the place where everyone has always gone to have alot of sex with different people before they get married’).  I think I am at least vaguely attractive and I’m no psycho bunny-boiler – I know the rules of this sport. However, despite ONLY  joking to my housemates about hanging up my g-string and retiring from the game as there were no suitable opponents, it seem the universe may have taken me seriously.  Apart from one ‘game’ last December, I’ve been on the bench for over a year.

Trend Alert: Double Denim

by Amazona on March 30, 2009

This week I was doing some research on the horrific new trend that is Double-Denim (doesn’t it sound like an early 90’s pop band?). As soon as I read this on fashionising.com, I knew I couldn’t do better. It encapsulated exactly what I felt.

“  I have a confession. I hate the 1980s.

Born in the middle of the decade I’m too young to remember any of its culture, instead preferring endless memories of Thomas The Tank Engine. That may be a lie actually, I do remember part of the culture. I remember perms. I remember mullets. I remember a plethora of crimes committed against my young eyes by baby boomers who should have known better (though that generation aren’t exactly known for getting anything right). And amongst those heinous crimes which aided the development of my acute sense of loathing all things 80’s is double denim.

Which brings me to some terrible news dear readers: double denim is back.

But there’s hope. There’s hope that we’ve caught it soon enough. There’s hope that we can show people the error of their ways before double denim spreads. And Fashionising.com is going to lead the charge: normally fully behind the majority of fashion trends and micro-trends, we’re labelling the double denim fashion trend the major faux pas amongst all of 2009’s fashion trends and 2010’s fashion trends.”

Oops.. Ok, so I was born a couple of years earlier than the mid 80’s but everything else is bang on.  I mean, come on now - if it can make Kanye West look like village idiot that it truly should be avoided by us mere mortals.

Great news in the battle for longer (and curvier fit!) jeans! Atlanta-based PZI Jeans has announced the launch of a collection of skinny jeans made just for curvy women. What’s even better is they’re making these new styles in very short and very long inseams… Jeans for real women!

PZI now offers ten different styles of Skinny Jeans that are said to be becoming all the rage of curvy fashionistas. “PZI Jeans was one of the first denim lines to develop a Skinny Jean for curvy women, we have taken it a step further to offer an entire collection of PZI Skinny Jeans, designed especially to meet the fit challenges of curvy women,” explains PZI Jeans Co-Founder and Vice President, Claire Jason.

“The industry said curvy women should never wear Skinny Jeans or they would look like an ice cream cone, so many lines did not offer a Skinny Jean for curvy women. Initially we did not offer our customer the Skinny Jean either. But, our customers kept asking for the Skinny Jean. So we started researching, studied and developed the perfect Skinny Jean for curvy women,” explains PZI.

Although PZI Jeans designers constantly follow fashion trends they do not take everything written in the media about what a curvy woman should or should not wear to heart:  “The curvy woman’s concept of her fashion style is misunderstood by a many in the fashion media, the success of our PZI Skinny Jeans is proof of this fact.”

PZI Jeans are available in sizes 4-16 with short, regular, long and extra-long inseams (up to 38 inches!) so that women short and tall can buy their jeans off the rack with no more costly alterations. PZI Jeans are available at select Macy’s Stores and over 600 retail stores in the United States and overseas with plans to expand into South America. For international customers, check out the website and give them a call and PZI will endeavour to supply any customer in any country.

The Black Clutch: A Wardrobe Essential

by Stefanie Grace on March 15, 2009

The black clutch is a wardrobe staple. You can carry it going out for drinks or even if you’re planning a longer night! It can be formal with a dress and heels, or informal with jeans and an oversized boyfriend blazer. It is a favourite of celebrities and fashionistas alike, and is not some fad that will be forgotten in a few months time.

Amazona Style has recently got hold of an plethora of on-trend clutches in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes, but as any fashion maven worth her salt will tell you, the black clutch is the classic. The bag that you’ll always grab when in a hurry and need something stylish to perk up an outfit.

For styling ideas, look no further than La Moss for her casual yet ultimately chic display of such a bag or even her more elegant, yet sexy evening look with a similar patent creation.

Long-legged fashionista Chloe Sevigny has also pulled this look off effortlessly and I love Evan Rachel Wood’s simple clutch at this year’s Golden Globes.

Amazona’s offering on this trend is just as tempting, especially with a jaw-dropping price tag of just £35, how can you resist?

Grab yours at Amazona Style before they sell out.

Trend Alert: Big Earrings

by Amazona on February 28, 2009

OK, so there are times when fashion just gets little too carried away - 10.5cm earrings? Yep, they’d be practical catching the tube or serving someone in a restaurant.

Great big earrings were seen at Stella McCartney, Zac Posen & Louis Vuitton’s SS09 shows while feathers featured on the catwalks of Giles, Celine and Sonia Rykiel.

Grab those trends, hook them up with the current buzz for bold coloured accessories and here you have the perfect antidote to feeling a little under lacking in the style department. Even better, this is one trend that tall women can make the most of with your proportions taking earrings like this better than shorter woman.

It would also cheer me up no end if I wore this pair of peacock blue chandeliers on a miserable Monday morning in London!

The Tall Girls & their Oscars Fashion Failures.

by Amazona on February 23, 2009

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear…. We thought that the Oscars, held last night in Hollywood, should provide some excellent guidance to tall girls and women all over the world on evening dress: what to wear and how to wear it. How wrong we were….

The two tallest actresses present (both at 5ft 10.5), Tilda Swinton and Nicole Kidman, both have enviable figures to go with that supermodel-esque height. Did they make the most of it? Hell, No!

Tilda Swinton looked like a ghost - and not in an ethereal, dreamy way. Her skin seemed to actually match her nude-grey blouse from Lanvin. The black skirt had an interesting cut but seemed to hang off the slender Ms Swinton like a potato sack. In fact, her outfit did absolutely nothing for her figure. The slick of bright red lipstick didn’t even liven-up this look, it may even have made the blandness more obvious?

At least Nicole Kidman didn’t manage as many disasters in one outfit. Although, do you find this gown at all inspiring? The epitome of glamour, it most definitely is not. I think the colour is all wrong for Ms Kidman. You’d have thought designer L’Wren Scott might have given the girl a slightly different shade of nude so that she too didn’t seem to merge skin with dress from afar. I also have to say “Nicole! What are those RIDICULOUS feathers doing all over the place?”. It looks like she’s a modern take on cobweb-covered Miss Haversham!

If you’re looking for inspiration for evening or prom wear this year, then look somewhere else. Don’t look to the Oscar’s. Try the Golden Globes or even the BAFTA’s. This years 81st Academy Awards were definitely too tall an order for either of our statuesque girls to pull off, it seems.

SS09 Trends: Bright Accessories

by Amazona on February 19, 2009

England’s weather has suddenly lept into Spring with yesterday’s temperature of a whopping 11 degrees. Before we know it lambs will be bounding around the fields and I’ll still be wearing my dark, layered up Winter wardrobe. I don’t know about you, but some light relief from the endless financial doom and gloom is exactly what I need right now - so I’ve been making a shopping list!

This year’s Spring accessories trends are just the tonic for cheering us all up. Too many designers to mention showed big, bright and bold colours on everything from bags and shoes, to hats, scarves and jewellery for SS09. Here’s the first of several posts on Amazona’s pick of what we’ve got our eyes on to work this trend.

Bring a little sunshine into your life for only £14.75. This bright yellow clutch from ASOS will sort out this trend for you, and for less money than a drink with the girls!

Continuing with the ‘bright and bold’ trend, top of the shoe pick is these ultra sexy, purple heels (again from Amazona Style). Putting on an outrageous pair of heels never feels to make me feel like a million dollars! This pair are £69.00 in the sale and available in UK sizes 9-11.

If you’re wanting a daily boost to your commute, how about swapping your standard (no doubt in black or brown) work bag for this bright blue, buttersoft leather bag from Blondie Mania at £82.50.
