Deck The Halls with Boughs of Holly….(no, really…do!)

by Amazona on December 11, 2008

Forget the recent gold, black, peacock blue and purple bling binges of Christmases past. This year, the thrifty-chic zeitgeist is bringing a fresher, more natural look to our preparations, with design gurus proclaiming a return to conifer greens and holly-berry reds: something altogether simpler and more organic. You’ve seen that Marks & Spencer Christmas advert? Use that for inspiration.

If you’re considering decorating this weekend and want to keep up on trend and under budget, we suggest you nip down the local market, farmer’s market or christmas tree sales yard and stock up with ivy, holly and mistletoe (or if you’re lucky enough – outside your front door!). You’d be surprised at the amazing, Vogue-style glamorous effect a good dose of nature’s finest can provide when used in abundance.

My mother has always been a fan of this style of Christmas ornamentation and always taught me that you can always refresh any old decorations or highlight the holly tips with a can of silver, gold or white paint.

So, Father Christmas, here is this year’s decorative wish list. We’d like an unshowy but stylish Christmas. We want to go relatively ecofriendly, heavy on the homemade decorations, less of the bought-in baubles, easy on the budget. On the other hand, we aren’t willing to skimp on the evergreen-scented, candle-lit fabulousness of the season.
